The Dark Knight Rises is a 2012 superhero film directed by Christopher Nolan, who co-wrote the screenplay with David S. Goyer. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, it is the third installment in Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy. It stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne / Batman, with Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Morgan Freeman in supporting roles. Eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, Batman has disappeared into self-imposed exile following the death of District Attorney Harvey Dent. However, his return is required when the mercenary Bane threatens to destroy Gotham City.
The Dark Knight Rises received critical acclaim, with praise for Nolan's direction, the performances of the cast (particularly Bale and Hardy), the screenplay, action sequences, cinematography, musical score, and themes.
