Captain America: The First Avenger
The story of Steve Rogers, a young man who is transformed into the world's first superhero, Captain America.
In the 1940s, sickly but determined Steve Rogers is frustrated at being rejected yet again for military service. Everything changes when Dr. Erskine recruits him for the secret Project Rebirth. Proving his extraordinary courage, wits, and conscience, Rogers undergoes the experiment and his weak body is suddenly enhanced into the maximum human potential. When Dr. Erskine is then immediately killed by an agent of Nazi Germany's secret HYDRA research department, Rogers is left as the sole man capable of wielding the power of the Super Soldier Serum.
Soon after, Rogers goes on his first mission and rescues Bucky Barnes and the 107th Infantry Regiment from HYDRA's Arnim Zola. Rogers then begins a propaganda tour as Captain America, but soon embarks on more dangerous missions, including the rescue of Peggy Carter, the love of his life. Rogers and Barnes eventually join forces with the Howling Commandos, a group of soldiers including Dum Dum Dugan, Gabe Jones, Jim Morita, James Montgomery Falsworth, and Jacques Dernier.
While on a USO tour, Rogers learns that Barnes has been captured by HYDRA. Rogers and the Howling Commandos mount a rescue mission, but arrive to find Barnes seemingly having been killed by HYDRA's Wolfgang von Strucker. Rogers vows to kill Schmidt, the leader of HYDRA and the man responsible for Barnes' apparent death.
Rogers tracks Schmidt to his secret HYDRA base, where he witnesses Schmidt using the Tesseract, a powerful energy source, to open a portal to another dimension. Rogers battles Schmidt, who is mutated by the Tesseract's energy and transformed into the Red Skull. Rogers manages to defeat Schmidt by sending him into the portal, which closes, seemingly killing Schmidt.
With the war over, Rogers and Carter share a dance, but Rogers is unable to let go of the past and decides to crash-land the plane carrying the Tesseract into the Arctic. He is found decades later by S.H.I.E.L.D. and revived.
